Overview

Generic Title

Horizon Workrooms is Meta’s VR collaboration product designed to make remote teamwork feel natural. I worked as part of a small art team partnering with design and engineering to build polished virtual workspaces, shape interactive systems, and create environments that support clear communication and comfort. My work included the exterior world, interior reskins, customisation tools, the video chat screen system, and new furniture across multiple themes.

Skybox and Reskins

I designed and led the creation of the new exterior environment for Workrooms, building a space that looked appealing from every seat in the room. The goal was to create an exterior that not only framed the views but also set the tone for the entire environment, since the outdoor lighting heavily influenced the feel inside. I defined the look, layout, and lighting direction, and later collaborated with Ocean Quigley who helped bring the final pass together. Alongside the exterior, I reskinned the full interior with new materials, colour direction, lighting, and customisation options, including a configurable wall logo and changeable posters to give users more control over their meeting space.

Creating the Video Chat Screen

I designed the new video chat system that lets non VR users join Workrooms meetings. I led the visual and motion design, defining how the VC screen sat in the room while idle, how it powered on, how it adapted as more people joined, and how it powered off. I created a wide range of motion tests to explore behaviour, timing, and clarity, and worked closely with stakeholders, product designers, and engineers to refine the experience and bring it into the final shipped product. I only have stills available here, but the system was fully implemented and released in production.

Furniture Design and Environment Updates

I designed new chairs and created updated table textures for each of the new Workrooms environments. Every furniture set was built to match the tone, materials, and style of its respective space, from the clean city office to the relaxed beach setting. These updates helped unify the rooms, improve visual clarity, and give each environment a stronger identity.
